Music and Family

For this Blog I thought it would be cool to interview my mom. My mom isn't in particular from the past she was born in the mid 80s and grew up in the 90s. She grew up to immigrant parents from Argentina so I thought this would be an interesting interview combining American high school with South American culture and seeing which one she would choose. When I first asked my mom her face light up and was talking about some of her favorites from the 90s the first person she talked about was Selena. She exclaimed how Selena was her all time favorite artist in the early 90s and she exclaimed songs like "La Carcacha" and "Como La Flor" were some of her favorites. I asked her what inspired her love for Selena and her answer surprised me. She said Selena wasn't very popular at her school but her mother my grandmother was the one who got my mom to start listening. She had all the albums on CD and she would always listen to her. When Selena passed away from a gunshot in 1994 it hurt my mom really bad because she knew Selena would never be able to release music again and also because she had so much life left and she left in such a tragic way. Hearing her on the phone talking about this got me thinking of how similar this is to my situation growing up as a teenager. With popular artist that I really loved such as Mac Miller and Juice World dying at such a young age. It is crazy to see how some things never change in the music industry. Another band my mom talked about was "TLC." This was a popular girl band from the 90s. She enjoyed songs from this band such as "Waterfalls" and "Creep." This band my mom explained was different than Selena. She said for girls in her school during her teenage years this was the most popular band and people in her school would dress up similarly to how the people on the band would dress. I think its cool to interview people from past generations about music because even though it is different in a sense there are so many similarities.
