Big Blog 2

The type of music that I want to talk about is something that is very close to my heart and has been growing on me recently, it is called "Reggaeton." Reggaeton has grown on me recently, coming from a Spanish Background I always enjoyed Spanish music with my grandmother because she enjoyed listening to it and I enjoyed spending time with her and getting to learn about Argentine and Spanish culture. When I discovered Reggaeton music and artist like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Maluma it changed my whole view on Spanish music. It quickly became my favorite music because it had catchy Spanish vibes and had the same complex of American pop music.   Reggaeton is a popular music genre that originated in Puerto Rico in the late 1990s. It combines elements of reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and Latin American styles such as salsa and merengue. Reggaeton is known for its infectious beats, catchy melodies, and energetic lyrics. The genre gained international popularity in the early 2000s and...

For this Blog I thought it would be cool to interview my mom. My mom isn't in particular from the past she was born in the mid 80s and grew up in the 90s. She grew up to immigrant parents from Argentina so I thought this would be an interesting interview combining American high school with South American culture and seeing which one she would choose. When I first asked my mom her face light up and was talking about some of her favorites from the 90s the first person she talked about was Selena. She exclaimed how Selena was her all time favorite artist in the early 90s and she exclaimed songs like "La Carcacha" and "Como La Flor" were some of her favorites. I asked her what inspired her love for Selena and her answer surprised me. She said Selena wasn't very popular at her school but her mother my grandmother was the one who got my mom to start listening. She had all the albums on CD and she would always listen to her. When Selena passed away from a gunshot i...

Salsa dance is a popular social dance that originated in the Caribbean, specifically in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Its roots can be traced back to the late 19th century, when African and Spanish musical styles began to blend in Cuba.   In Cuba, the African rhythms of rumba, son, and mambo mixed with Spanish music and dance styles such as the danzón and cha-cha-cha to create a new form of music and dance that eventually became known as salsa. Salsa music is characterized by a syncopated rhythm that combines elements of African and Latin music.   Salsa dance evolved from the Cuban son and rumba, with influences from other Latin American and African dance styles. The dance incorporates a variety of turns, spins, and footwork patterns that are executed in a circular motion around a partner.   In the 1950s, salsa dance spread to New York City, where it was popularized by Latin American immigrants. It evolved further in the United States, incorporating elements of jazz, swing, and ...

Music and Gender

Music and Gender is a weird thing to me. When I grew up it didn't matter to me if I listened to a women or a man in some cases depending on how I was feeling I preferred a women. They have more soothing voices sometimes a good artist that shows this is SZA. When I think about women in music I think about people who have paved the wave for artist like SZA to be successful. A name that comes to mind is Whitney Houston. Whitney Houston was an American Singer in the 80s that was one of the most famous singers not just of her generation but of all time. In 2023 Rolling Stones ranked her number 2 on the greatest artist of all time. She is most famous for her countless songs like "I will always love you" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." She is the first artist to have seven number 1 hits and she is the first women to enter the Billboard number 1. Houston is the most awarded female artist to this day. She was very influential in an area that is dominated by men she s...

Music and Ritualls

I had been looking at several rituals from around the world but one stood out to me in particular. An interesting ritual that I found that is correlated to music is the Native Hawaiians before the were colonized and they were part of America. Song and dance were used as essential parts of religious expressions. Song and Dance were used in ceremonies such as marking the seasons of the year, death, coming of age, and healing from illness. Most of the songs were sacred and only were for that specific group in native Hawaii to hear. In 1830 the Hawaiian island had been taken over by a Christian and the missionaries on the island convinced the ruler of the island to ban the famous Hawaiian dance the hula. This was interesting to me because it was somewhat similar to the Native American rituals we were learning about in class and I think its interesting that a place thousands of miles away could have similar rituals and that the new people on there land would want to kick them off the land a...

Music and Me

Right know I have started listening to a band that has been around for almost a decade but I have just started to get into them. The band is called "The Neighboorhood" and my favorite song by them right now is "Reflections." The song is really catchy and I just like it for no particular reason. I like it because I can listen to it any time of the day and it puts me in a good mood. I wished I discovered the band earlier because now they aren't together and won't be going on tour anymore. A piece of music that is particular meaningful to me is "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor. This piece of music is connected to me playing soccer with my brother. The song helped create a special bond between us because we would listen to it before every game in the car while driving to the stadium. This song helped create a bond with my brother and it grew us a lot closer together. Now that my brother is still in high school and I'm playing in college we still l...
