Music and Gender

Music and Gender is a weird thing to me. When I grew up it didn't matter to me if I listened to a women or a man in some cases depending on how I was feeling I preferred a women. They have more soothing voices sometimes a good artist that shows this is SZA. When I think about women in music I think about people who have paved the wave for artist like SZA to be successful. A name that comes to mind is Whitney Houston. Whitney Houston was an American Singer in the 80s that was one of the most famous singers not just of her generation but of all time. In 2023 Rolling Stones ranked her number 2 on the greatest artist of all time. She is most famous for her countless songs like "I will always love you" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." She is the first artist to have seven number 1 hits and she is the first women to enter the Billboard number 1. Houston is the most awarded female artist to this day. She was very influential in an area that is dominated by men she stood out and dominated at the top. She influenced many women artist that we see today and without her works we wouldn't see the likes of Beyonce or Rihanna.

Houston paved the way for more African American Artist but when I think about women in pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Pink, and Brittney Spears one name that broke boundaries and expectations for women is Madonna. Madonna is a singer that started up in the 80s and is still making music up to this day. She is considered the "Queen of Pop" for very good reason. She is beloved for her contributions with paving the way for female artist as well as transcending gender as far as how the public looked at female singers. She sung with a radical, rebellious and revolutionary way that hadn't been seen in a female artist until now. She will ever be iconic for that and women pop singers for generation can thank her.
